Mentor notes

7th March, 2011
Students present:
Saskia, Caleb, Vivian, Megan and Katie

The students shared their reasons as to why they chose this particular topic.

1) They were fascinated by the environment and the animals in it and
2) They were eager to make a difference and help be part of the solution to a problem that is slowly spinning out of control.

I explained how I could help them. I thought of creating a blog which would help them find a medium through which they could express their findings, where they could reflect and ask questions. My aim as a mentor would be to inculcate reflective students who work collaboratively in order to come to a greater understanding of the central idea..

Activity
Students created a mind map of what they think they understood about the unit.

I will take a photo of this and insert into their blog page. Hopefully after showing them how to do this, they will be posting images and videos themselves.
This is an ideal place for them to explore various web 2.0 tools and see which one best helps them express what they want to say.

I'm excited! :)

Today we discussed suitable inquiry lines that would excite us and stimulate inquiry.
We came up with very good ones we thought. I hope to see the students put this on the blog themselves rather than me doing it here.

They are still getting used to the idea of the blog and need to learn to organize their work.
From today's meeting, the qualities of each student was emerging. The inquirer, the listener, the risk taker, the leader, the creative one....hmmm... we have a motley group indeed!

I have taken a video to record the conversation taking place. It will give us a fairly rough idea of the students involved.
